Petrified Chemical Gardens

چکیده

Chemical gardens are tubular structures that consist of inorganic precipitate membranes formed under far-from-equilibrium conditions. Their possible existence in natural geological settings complicates the differentiation between Earth’s earliest microfossils and abiotic as well search for life signatures on other planets. Here, we address question whether laboratory-grown chemical can withstand encapsulation a slowly forming matrix. We report high-temperature conditions which FeCl3-derived persist several months allowing surrounding silicate solution to solidify. This crystallization typically starts surface gardens, embeds them within spheroidal globules, finally spreads across entire system create rock-like sample with preserved garden complex inclusion. show initially solution-filled interior tube also undergoes solidification minor amounts iron present. The main matrix material is identified polycrystalline sodium hexahydrate. results be compared enigmatic mineral tubules some (e.g., agates), instances overgrowths quartz.

Spiral precipitation patterns in confined chemical gardens.

Chemical gardens are mineral aggregates that grow in three dimensions with plant-like forms and share properties with self-assembled structures like nanoscale tubes, brinicles, or chimneys at hydrothermal vents. The analysis of their shapes remains a challenge, as their growth is influenced by osmosis, buoyancy, and reaction-diffusion processes. Here we show that chemical gardens grown by injec...

Oscillatory growth of silica tubes in chemical gardens.

We report distinct growth regimes of hollow silica fibers formed by hydrodynamic injection of cupric sulfate into silicate solution. The tubes grow either steadily along a continuous jet of buoyant solution or through relaxation oscillations that are governed by chemo-mechanical processes. The dependence of the oscillation period on flow rate and copper concentration is explained in the framewo...

Petrified Wood Survey of Land Adjacent to Petrified Forest National Park, AZ

An intensive survey was conducted on HNZ land, a subsidiary of Hunt Inc., which owns the mineral rights to land located adjacent to the Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona, United States. The purpose of the survey was to log the position and characteristics of petrified wood to better protect the fossils from thieves and to assess the value of Hunt lands. A monetary value was assigned to ea...

Creative Gardens

Can we move beyond simply networking creative individuals to establishing diverse communities of practice for innovation through discursive methods. Furthermore, can we digitise their creativity activities within an integrative socio-cultural collaborative technology platform that could then support distributed innovation. First, we consider the complexity of creative cultures from the perspect...

A Rare Case of Petrified Ear

Calcification or ossification of the auricle, also referred to as petrified ear, is a rare diagnosis in dermatology. In medical literature, it has most often been attributed to trauma, hypothermia and frostbite, or hypercalcemia secondary to a metabolic or endocrine disorder, such as Addison's disease. Here, we report the clinical and radiologic findings of a 79-year-old African American male w...
